What is Mohs Surgery?

Mohs Micrographic Surgery is a “specialized, highly effective technique” used in the removal of certain types of skin cancer. It’s name is derived from Dr. Frederic Mohs who developed the procedure in the 1930s at the University of Wisconsin. The procedure is different than other skin cancer treatments, as it allows the entire examination and removal of the cancerous tissue to be completed in one visit. As a result of this expedient process, as well as the methodical removal and examination of the tissue, Mohs surgery as a treatment for skin cancer has been recognized as having the highest reported cure rate.

What are some of the advantages of Mohs Surgery?

Mohs surgery is a controlled, precise process. Prior to entering surgery, it’s impossible to know the amount of skin that will have to be removed, as some cancers can extend “roots” further under the skin than may be seen from the surface. It’s for this reason that the precise method of Mohs surgery of tracking and removing these “roots” is the preferred method. With Mohs, only the cancerous tissue is removed, while the normal tissue is preserved.

Can the procedure be performed in your office?

Yes. We perform the Mohs procedure here in our Salem office four days a week - Tuesday through Friday

How long does it take?

We schedule all Mohs for either an entire morning or an entire afternoon. The procedure can take between one hour and four hours—the length of the procedure depends on the number of cancers removed, the size of cancer(s), and how many layers are removed from each spot.  Rarely, the surgery can take an entire day.

How do I prepare for surgery?

You will have an initial visit(s) before the surgery is scheduled and the doctor will go over all details with you before you come in on surgery day.  Since these surgeries can take a while and a lot of the time involves waiting. It may be a good idea to bring a book, or magazine. We will have coffee, drinks, and snacks available for you for longer waiting times.

Will my insurance cover it?

Please check with your insurance company as to any surgical coverage benefits. We will always try to obtain any prior-authorizations, or referrals for you prior to your visit, but individual reimbursement benefits are specific to your individual plan and we cannot guarantee what your insurance benefits will be or what they will pay.
